Motorists will not be pleased to learn that Albany has figured out a new way to pick your pocket for your Traffic Ticket-and it’s more than the
fine in most cases !!
Beginning on November 18th, 2004, violations occurring on or after that date will incur a “DRIVER RESPONSIBILITY ASSESSMENT” The DRA is a new, mandatory payment of $100.00 per year for three years to New York State, if a driver’s point total is 6 points or over in an eighteen month period. This applies to OUT OF STATE drivers as well as New York licensed drivers. New York will suspend the privilege of out of state drivers who are suspended under the DRA to operate while in New York.Failure to pay your yearly DRA will result in SUSPENSION in New York State. In plain language, you can properly deal with the ticket and be clear with the Courts, but still be suspended for failing to pay the later DRA assessments. Every six point ticket will now carry a $300.00 tail under the DRA. Six points = $100.00 for three yearsSeven points = $125.00 for three years Eight points = $150.00 for three years Nine points = $175.00 for three years Ten points = $200.00 for three years Eleven points = $225.00 for three years …………………………in addition to any fines and surcharges already paid. In a final swipe at the driver’s wallet, taking a driver improvement course will NOT reduce your point total for DRA taxation purposes. Now, more than ever, every ticket has to be challenged. Have you already pled guilty? The Law Offices of Casey
